Work from home stories during the pandemic: The COVID-19 crisis is transforming work and how it is done. Let's find out how Michael Krüger from Infinite Devices sees the home office situation!
Michael Krüger: Even before the pandemic, I worked from home as a freelancer for more than ten years and never really understood why many media companies still spend a lot of money on expensive offices. Sure: it´s maybe cool to work in a factory loft, with a harbor view, and a thick carpet with a lounge area and bar; but you don’t need to. In creative jobs you first and foremost need rest. You can’t sit in an office with marketing people anyway, because they talk on the phone all day. That has always annoyed me in big offices. Of course, the friendly chat over coffee is missing in between, but I live in the middle of Hamburg and life happens right outside my door. My desk is more like a command center with two large monitors and a sound system. When I’m just typing, I take my laptop and sit in front of my door, in a café or go to the park. It’s just better in creative jobs and I’ve never been the 9-to-5 office type. I’ve always preferred to work according to my own schedule even when I was in agency work. Of course: the model with five working days and a weekend are firmly established in society and anchored in the economic code.
What don't you like about working from home?
MK: Actually nothing. I communicate more via Skype and Zoom than in the office - somehow the collaboration is more focused. But I’ve heard from some colleagues that they don’t like working from home at all. Problem number one is that some people feel uncomfortable and alone without colleagues. Problem number two is the facilities: no suitable workplace, a tiny desk, a poor chair, no second monitor, slow WiFi, no printer. However, with today’s affordable monitors, printers, WiFi, etc. these are solvable problems. But of course, when your home is too small and especially when you have small children and schools are closed, the whole thing naturally can become a huge problem.
What have you learned from the pandemic time? How did the Corona pandemic change the way you work and think?
MK: How fragile our whole system is and how little relevance my creative role-plays in a global crisis, compared to jobs in hospitals and retail. I’ve also discovered that creative roles I have been passionately active in for decades can dissolve overnight. Humility too. In addition, a mixture of sadness, fear, and anger. The only “positive”, if you like to call it that, is that an awareness of badly paid and important professions has arisen. And the home office will be a big thing in the future, I guess. Some companies in the USA pay their employees bonuses if they work from home. This will be a long way off in Europe and Germany because the structures here are too crusted.
Why has digitalization become even more critical in Germany after the pandemic started?
MK: In any case - I mentioned the USA as an example. The digital expansion in Germany is a total failure. It’s hard to believe: Germany’s internet speed is at the bottom of the industrial nations. When it comes to reports, you can only hold your head: since January 1, 2021, reports from laboratories to health authorities are no longer sent by fax, but by email. In the Bundestag, you have to print out color printouts two days in advance. Leading technology nation, Germany? Maybe you can see this era as a department in the Deutsche Museum in Munich. It is maybe almost too late to be at the forefront again. But maybe there is a miracle.

are working on a new album, I'll be mixing and mastering again, and they sent some first drafts to sort out the "online collab" process ... well it's gonna be Logic and WeTransfer ... the likes ... and the new mobile studio setup: MacBook, mobile screen, iPad, Flow 8 interface ... as we go I might do some live sessions as we did for "Neurosen Bluehen".
Mit Tom Wendt habe ich im Oktober 2020 bei der Session#1 Staccato- und Northkits abgemiked und Sounds und Fills in verschiedenen Tempi aufgenommen. Jeweils 5 Hits pro Tom von Soft bis Hard, Rimclick und Rimshot. Dazu verschiedene Fills von 105bpm bis 180bpm. SOUNDS
Das neue OT-Album ist in Progress: 2021 wird unser 6. Album erscheinen. Wie immer beim Label Danse Macabre und wie immer wird das Album gemixt und gemastert von Sound Engineer Tom Wendt. Freut euch darauf!
